Bengkung Belly Binding training

“Belly Binding is not just a piece of cloth you wrap around the body”

Contrary to many belly binding trainings, courses, and D.I.Y tutorials out there teaching people how to put on the belly bind, there is so much more to this tradition than just taking a long piece of cloth and wrapping it around the body.

Bengkung should not be done in isolation”

Back in the day, belly binding was done by respectable midwives with the skills and knowledge that were passed down to them through generational wisdom. It was soul work—starting with setting intentions, using healing touch and herbal medicine, and encompassing everything with sacred connections. Belly binding was only done after a series of postpartum treatments.

“Unfortunately, today, belly binding outside of its culture has been reduced to being just a piece postpartum garment.”

Meet Your Trainer,
Salwa Salim

salwa salim

I come from a lineage of traditional midwives passed through my mother, Mama Gie, down to my sister and me. My extended families are still midwives, herbalists, massage therapists, and medicine men. I haven’t always been in this line. I was western educated and received a scholarship from National University Hospital Singapore, earning a B.As in Medical Imaging. By a twist of fate, my work experience in hospitals and private clinics lead me to this path— bridging the wisdom of traditional medicine to a modern perspective and medical insights.

My work in the Malay birthing tradition has received national recognition in Singapore. I am often invited to collaborate with universities, museums, heritage centers e.t.c for notable projects such as UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage. I’ve been cited in books and journals and am a regular face in the media regarding Malay birthing traditions.

If you are not familiar with bengkung belly binding..

salwa salim

Bengkung belly binding is the key to healing and slimming afterbirth. My team and I have put on the belly bind to thousands of women, and despite everything I knew about postpartum care, I still needed help. My baby was born almost 4 weeks earlier than his EDD. So my mother could not attend to my birth or be there during the crucial early days of my postpartum. My labor was complicated, I had 3rd-degree tearing and restricted movements, and I was all alone.

So I searched high and low and found many classes, workshops, and services —but they were primarily geared towards prenatal and birth. While I did find postpartum doulas, I needed help with healing. I was pleasantly surprised when I found bengkung belly binding being offered. I was even more surprised to see how popular it was, but my excitement was short-lived. The belly binding I found was not how belly binding is supposed to be.

Bengkung belly binding has been practiced by the Malays for centuries and is very much practiced today as it was back in the day. It has become a common practice among postpartum women of different races in many parts of Southeast Asia. While there are many styles, types, and techniques of bengkung belly binding, I have found only this particular technique to be used or offered for services— even though the other variations of belly bind were more suitable for different body shapes, sizes, and conditions of the postpartum body.

And there is a preparation that needs to be done before putting on the belly bind —massage, womb repositioning, warming the abdomen with a hot stone or herbal ball, followed by applying herbs to continuously warm the abdomen as you leave the bengkung belly bind on. However, all these crucial steps were missing in the services offered and those teaching others did not include all these aspects of belly binding.

The health benefits of belly binding for recovery, restoration, and prevention are well known. But belly binding also addresses a major concern among pregnant and postpartum mothers that is too taboo to even talk abouttheir body. From my personal experience,

.. every single pregnant and postpartum women are concerned about their body, shape, and size.

Women are often shamed when they express this concern. Other women often tell them to be proud of their bodies and honor their strips. If you are a mother, you know these words can be painful to hear. Imagine waking up every day feeling depressed looking at your disproportionate body and being told to accept it and don’t talk about it. You cannot exercise, you cannot diet, and your body looks the worse it has ever been in your life. You feel helpless and this issue is a major cause of depression.

While I agree we should promote body acceptance, there is a time and place for everything. And now is not the time to tell her to accept her body. Allow her time to grieve and offer a non-judgemental listening ear for her bodily desires. And the beauty of bengkung belly binding is it doesn’t just heal; it gives the women hope and purpose and empowers her that she can take active steps to improve her situation.

Now imagine instead of ignoring these concerns, as a Belly Binding Matron,
you become a safe space for these mothers to express themselves without judgment and then offer belly binding to address their insecurities about their bodies.

To all Trained or Experienced Belly Binding Practitioner..

You have completed your training, obtained certification, and gained valuable experience. Perhaps you have even taught others. Now, you may wonder why further belly binding training & courses are necessary as you consider yourself an expert?

Let me ask you these few questions..

  • Do you know the many different types, names, and variations of bengkung belly binding?
  • Do you know that bengkung is not Malaysian or Indonesian?
  • Do you know about the culture and tradition that belly binding is part of?
  • Do you know the correct phonetic pronunciation of “bengkung“?
  • Did you do your training in person with an actual trainer?
  • Was your training under a native Malay practitioner? or did your trainer learn under a native Malay practitioner?
  • Do you know the etiquette for performing bengkung belly binding?

If you answer no to any of these questions above, you may need to reevaluate the authenticity of what you think you know about belly binding.  In fact, I observe too many mistakes made by supposedly experienced belly binding practitioners, and here are the top ones..

In my humble opinion, here is the problem with most trainings or practitioners..

  • Questionable Experts

Years of experience do not equate to a high level of competency. Many self-proclaimed experts and trainers have no accountability for the authenticity or quality of their work.

  • Lack Authority

Never met an actual genuine practitioner nor witnessed how belly binding is done relative to the other postpartum traditions. Neither was exposed to other belly binding practitioners nor had any feedback from anyone else.

  • Questionable Source

The origins of the skills and knowledge have been so watered-down that the source of the information can no longer be traced or authenticated.

  • Online Learning

Bodywork, such as massage and belly binding should not be taught online. Especially to inexperienced people who have never worked with a postpartum body. Some training requires a pair of hands to guide yours.

  • Lack Authenticity

No cultural context or inaccurate cultural facts. Belly binding is part of a larger holistic postpartum tradition that is often excluded or not explained/ practiced in accordance

  • One-Off Training

A one-off training earning you a certificate, does not make you competent. You will encounter situations in which you will not know what to do. You need guidance and a community to discuss, give feedback and ask questions

Naadu Davies Pugh

“I have been a perinatal bodyworker for over a decade, and a birth worker for nearly as long. I have taken dozens of various trainings, including other belly binding training. Salwa’s course gave me a deeper understanding of the way belly binding supports the postpartum body, as well as the cultural awareness that this tradition deserves.”

“The training was so much more than just a workshop on belly binding.  It was an opportunity to delve into the deep traditions and postpartum wisdom of the Malay culture.  I attended this training knowing how much Salwa had poured into it behind the scenes and was so pleasantly impressed with how professional and meticulous and beautiful her and her team’s work was.  The Birth Matron training I attended gave me so much more than I expected. I would absolutely recommend it and go back for future learning.  Hats off to Salwa and her team for a beautiful and intentional offering. ”

“You have truly given such a soul-fulfilling vibe and it was so beautiful for you to share the Malay traditions with us and understand ourstory. Much love and appreciation as well as light”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

We believe hands-on skills such as massage or belly binding can only be learned with the guidance of an in-person trainer. Some skills require the learner to be present where no virtual interaction can replace the personal touch. It is necessary to have a hands-on learning/teaching approach to properly acquire the skills necessary for you to safely and confidently perform the bengkung belly binding onto others.

Our training has limited seats to ensure high-quality training with ample time for in-person interaction and hands-on guidance by our trainers. By reserving a seat in our class, we are denying another student the opportunity to attend, hence our deposits are nonrefundable.

The deposit however is transferable to another student. We highly suggest you have a backup — a backup to replace you for the birth or a backup to replace you to attend our class.

There are many different types and styles of belly bind. You will be able to see, feel and touch all the different types of bengkung belly bind and we will share everything you need to know about them i.e material, length, and size.  Considering you need strong sewing skills and may even require special equipment depending on which type of belly bind you are trying to make, this training is not focused on making these belly bind.

After attending the in-person training and the live online class, you will be required to complete the assignments, and tests in order to receive the certification. The assignment requires you to show competency in belly-binding postpartum clients with the different styles and techniques of belly binding. The format of the test is MCQ and written, which is done online.

6 months after the completion of your training.

Anyone is free to belly bind clients as and how they see fit.

While you are free to belly bind your client, you are not able to associate your work with our training/certification until you have completed all your tests/assignments.

Come join me..
